The Saudi capital, Riyadh, was awarded the title of “Arab Environmental Capital” for two years during the 35th session of the Arab Council of Ministers Responsible for the Environment, which was chaired by the Kingdom and concluded today in Jeddah. This recognition honors Riyadh’s pioneering efforts in environmental conservation and promoting sustainability.
This announcement was made during the session organized by the Ministry of Environment, Water, and Agriculture from October 13 to 17, 2024, in cooperation with the Arab League, attended by numerous Arab ministers and representatives of regional and international organizations.
The session also witnessed the “Saudi Green Initiative” receiving the award for Outstanding Environmental Project at the Arab government sector level, highlighting the Kingdom’s pioneering role in adopting strategic visions and innovative, sustainable environmental projects.
During 2024, the capital Riyadh will host a number of significant environmental events, most notably the 16th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (COP 16). The conference will address several key topics, including the development of the Convention’s work, monitoring the implementation of the 2018–2030 Strategic Framework for the Convention, and tackling issues related to drought and dust storms. Representatives from 196 member countries, as well as international and regional organizations, will participate to discuss challenges related to desertification and drought and ways to address them. This is an event of great importance at both the Arab and global levels.
Following Riyadh being awarded the title of “Arab Environmental Capital” for two years, the city will host numerous activities and events aimed at raising environmental awareness, supporting sustainability, and organizing campaigns and projects to improve the quality of life and the environment in the region. These initiatives are expected to enhance Riyadh’s position as a global hub for environmental action and sustainable development in line with the Kingdom’s Vision 2030 goals.
